Media Advisory: 2011–The Year of the Flood?

Media Advisory: 2011–The Year of the Flood?

What:

USGS will brief Congress, the media and the public on flood forecasts for 2011.

Why:

Floods were the number one natural disaster in terms of lives lost and property damage every year during the 20th century. 2011 is likely to be a particularly bad year for flooding. For more than 100 years, the USGS has played a critical role in reducing flood losses by operating a nationwide streamgage network that monitors the water level and flow of the nation’s rivers and streams.

Who:

  • Brian McCallum, Assistant Director, USGS Georgia Water Science Center
  • Tom Graziano, Chief Hydrologic Services Division, NOAA National Weather Service
  • Brian Hurt, Marathon Oil, (formerly City Engineer Findlay, OH)

Where:

Longworth House Office Building, Room 1334, Washington D.C.

When:

Friday, April 15, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Sponsors:

Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY)

The briefing is free and open to the public. No RSVP required.
