For those of us who live in California, we know that once a quake’s magnitude is 5.9, it can scare the hell out of you, especially if you’re within 40-50 miles of the epicenter.
I remember the Chino Hills earthquake in 2008 registered a 5.7 and it scared the hell out of me about 27 miles away.
I recently in 2014, experienced a 5.3 earthquake and I was about 18 miles away and I still considered it fun. So I’m going to say that once an earthquake measures approximately a 5.5, earthquakes can really begin to rattle your nerves.
I’ve been in many earthquakes including the powerful 6.8 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles of 1994, and I thought my apartment building was going to collapse. I was approximately 14 miles from the epicenter. So, it was violent and caused incredible damage. I also remember the Landers earthquake that registered a 7.3 and it shook Los Angeles violently, even 100 miles away. Luckily it was in a remote location of Southern California though Palm Springs shook insanely. These kinds of earthquakes are not fun. I can’t imagine a 7.7 or stronger earthquake striking near Los Angeles. It’s going to be devastating !
